Tux Cluster Documentation

Welcome to the tux cluster! This is a general-purpose high-performance computing (HPC) cluster at the Department of Physics, NTNU. It serves all the students and researchers of Dr. Simonsen's group at the Simulation (or Simonsen) Laboratory (SimLab) for computational physics. This document will introduce you to the specific features of the tux cluster so that you can use it efficiently.

The initial installation of the system started in late 2020, and it is currently maintained by Egil Holvik (mostly hardware) and Ingve Simonsen (primarily software).

The cluster runs the Linux Operating System [Debian 12], and the HPC software stacks are configured and installed with the Spack package manager for HPC software.

The use of the tux cluster will benefit from knowledge of Scientific Computing and HPC!

Caveats

This documentation assumes that you have a working knowledge of linux/unix including the use of its basic command line utilities.

If needed, you may refresh your knowledge by viewing the videos on Beginner's Guide to the Bash Terminal or Linux Terminal Introduction. Alternatively, or in addition, you may want to study the material provided by the following pages: Linux shell crash course, Intro to Linux Command Line, or Introduction to Linux in HPC.
