General information
- The workshop will be held in Trondheim, situated in central Norway, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Despite the name, NTNU covers also human disciplines and has around 22.000 students.

- Trondheim, or Nidaros as it used to be called, was the capital of Norway up through the early Middle Age. The Sagas tell that the Viking king Olav Tryggvason founded the city at the mouth of the River Nidelva in 997.

- During the Middle Age, it became together with Santiago di Compostela one of major pilgrim destinations in Europe, with the grave of Saint Olav as main attraction. Nidarosdomen, the crowning church of Norwegian kings, is supposed to be built above Saint Olav's grave.
- General tourist information, links to hotels and city maps for Trondheim can be found here and here.
A block reservation has been done for the Hotel Park.
The hotel is in walking distance (10-15min) to the campus and offers special
conditions for NTNU guests. (Reservations have to be made by email; use 'SOCOR' as reservation code, prices are
845 for single and 1000 NOK for a double room.)
For other hotels see here. Cheaper possibilties include in particular the Elgeseter Hotell and the Singsaker Sommerhotell (during the year used as student residence).
- Sunrise and sunset data can be checked here.
- Trondheim is a stop of both north (daily departure 12:00) and south-going (daily departure 10:00) ships of the Hurtigrute. Hurtigruten claims to be the "World's most beautiful voyage" and is an ideal way to discover the fjords and the coastline of Norway. The two major air lines, SAS and Norwegian, offer relatively cheap one-way tickets. Thus it may be an attractive option to make a short cruise and to fly back from e.g. Bergen (1 day trip) in the south or Tromso (2 days) in the north.
